Last weekend we took a group of Scouts on a Backpacking trip. It was over
106 degrees and a new experience in backpacking for us and many Scouts. We
have always traveled on flat land, but this was a straight up the hill hike
experience. In the evening, the Scouts talked about what they should have
brought and what they should not have brought. Their main goal was to cut
down on the weight of their backpack. They shared stoves, and water was
purified with a filtering system and/or iodine. They put 3 Scouts in a 4 man
timberline tent, and with the hot weather, they didn't pack the fly. They
kept cans down to the minimum. Most of them felt they brought too much food
and clothes. They all agreed that they needed to bring something to flavor
the water.
I would love to get some more ideas to share with the Scouts in their
newsletter. I've been researching some of the web sites and will include
recommending lighter weight sleeping bags. Any more ideas??
