Same sort of thing happened with us a couple of years ago.
We were at Emerald Bay at Santa
Catalina Island (the Aquatics program is done in the Pacific there). It was
the 1st week of their summer season (which explains some of the rest of what
happened). We had 2 small Motorola Sports radios with the troop.
I had one and
we kept one with someone at our campsite (about 1/2 mile away). I happened
to be at the Aquatics area when they started to panic because at the end
of a shift there was one buddy tag left on the 'in water' board. Guess
whose troop it was? Well, anyway, as they were calling all staffers to
come to the water front to do an extensive water search ... I ambled over
and asked what was going on. They told me, I radioed the campsite, and in
1 minute we determined he was in his tent fast asleep!

We always bring at least 2 radios now. They really come in handy, and
if you give one to a senior Scout, you can let a group go with them ahead of you
on a trail, or do a bit of exploring and not worry as long as they
check in on a regular basis. Gives the Scouts some freedom from
nagging adults!

YiS,
Bill
