<< Anyway, our suggestion is for all scouters who participate in the UW, and
others who are asked to donate that they do so, even if the UW drops
scouting, but then designate your gift to either your local council or local
troop. Encourage others who support scouting, and are not on this list to do
the same.

It is possible to direct designate to a certain organization from the UW.
Donations to a specific troop may or may not be possible, depending on tax
status of the unit. The UW will take their "cut" of the money.

While the support of the local unit is an excellent idea, the local UW
will probably deduct the amount that is direct designated from the amount
that was scheduled to go to the Council. This may adversely effect the
Council's budget.

We had a situation several years ago where several employees of a
trucking company that is located close to where we meet, direct designated
money to our Troop. It was in excess of $10,000. The DE and SE were
knocking on my door insisting on getting the money for the Council. I was,
and am still of the opinion that the donor has the right to determine where
their money goes and I had no right to alter their wishes. After many
meetings, the Council demanded the money.

The bottom line ended up that the people that direct designated to the
Troop ended up withdrawing their pledges to the UW because they did not want
the Council to get the money, they wanted it to stay in the community. We
did not recieve any funds and the Council's regular amount was not offset.
All in all there were a lot of unhappy people over this incident.

    Financing is a funny beast.

I had been direct designating to our Council through the CFC, but found
out that the Council never received any of it. Now I just write a check to
the FOS, so I know that they get it.
