Well. I'm in it now.
I believe that whatever the truth is about homosexuality, it is private.
Whether my ex-husband and I slept in separate beds is private. Whether or
not I got to Wood Badge on a scholarship or full pay is private. Whether or
not I floss my teeth is private.
Keep private things private. That's number one.
Its just plain rude to do otherwise. And rude begets rude. If I choose to
disclose private information, I invite comment. Why would I be surprised if
people have varying opinions about my topic of disclosure? Why would I make
a federal case out of a situation that I provoked? Isn't that called
'hudzpah' (sp?) in some circles?
[My understanding of hudzpah - The criminal on trial for murdering his
parents throws himself on the mercy of the court because he's a poor orphan.
Right?]
Second, only the truly powerful can afford to be truly Gentle.
Ever watch a big old 17-year-old take a knee to demonstrate a tautline hitch
to a newer scout? That's gentleness. And that we can and must afford. We
have the power. The power that comes from the constructive entity
overlooking where 'two or more' gather with a constructive purpose. No more
power than any other group can plug into, but our power is based and focused
by the Scouting Values. On this we can agree. And we must neither disregard
nor abuse this power.
Third and last: (I can only handle three things at a time.) What I focus on
is what I see. Everything else blurs out. When I remember that, and I need
others to remind me sometimes, I know I have a chance to be productive.
That's what I'm about here: using my resources of time, energy and ideas to
support scouting, scouts and scouters. Ergo, truthful positive statements
about our contributions are absolutely in order. Regret, honestly expressed
where faulty situations come up is also appropriate. 'I hate when that
happens.'
I don't know a lot about Gays. I have some experience with G-d and Girls.
But, like my grandfather said, the day I stop learning from life and about
life, I'd better lay down because I'm dead. Thanks for the continued
learning.
