Several list members, in response to my message concerning staff attitudes
and trash problems at summer camp, suggested that a solution to the problem
would have been to close the trading post, or at least stop selling
"geedunk." I happen to agree with this, but I'd like to illustrate how such
a suggestion would have been received:

Mr. Mako: Gee, there's an awful lot of trash around here, can't something be
done?

Camp Director: Sure, you could talk to your Scouts and get them to stop
dropping trash.

Mako: My Scouts know what would happen to them if I caught them littering.
I've already dug the graves.

CD: Well, you know the racoons around here are pretty smart, and Scouts are
always bringing in junk food from outside camp.

Mako: Yes, but most of the ten pounds of trash I've collected this morning
is trading post stuff.

CD: Well, what would you suggest?

Mako: Well, there's the old Pick-Up-And-Win thing, that used to work pretty
well.

CD: Yes, well you know kids have changed since then. There would be fights
and arguments, and it would be impossible to enforce.

Mako: If you say so. How about shutting down the Trading Post, or stop
selling junk food, until the camp is cleaned up?

CD: HUH!? (Grabs his chest like Fred Sanford having the "big one 'lizbeth")
Shut - down - the - trading - post? (Gasping for air and fumbling for his
radio to call the Health Lodge) You - can't - be - serious!? (Pressing the
button and screaming into the mic) CALL 9-1-1!!!!! (He then collapses in a
heap. Racoons burst from the woods and begin performing CPR. Several large
one's grab Mr. Mako and drag him into the woods. He is never heard from
again.)
