If you son has not backpacked before. I would suggest you contact the Scoutmaster of your new troop and get advice from him. Most 11 year olds I know do not like to go backpacking...they are very slender and don't have the hips to keep a backpack supported, so they end up supporting the pack with their shoulders. Given that and the fact that they are too small to carry a heavy load (normal backpack loads are 35-45 lbs, which is 1/2 the weight of most 11 year olds, they would rather car camp than backpack. If after consulting with your new Scoutmaster, you still want to go backpacking your son's first year, you might consider renting a pack. That way you can try out a few different types of packs first.

Our troop has a camping/backpacking gear guide that our Eagle Scouts put together, you might want to consult it. (suggestions for improvement on the guide are welcome). The guide is at:

To answer the question of whether a 11 year old will outgrow his pack, I would say he will have outgrown it by the time he gets to be 13 or 14.
