Bob,
As an absolute minimum, a good Type III with at least a 15 lb rating. I
was wearing one like that when I went over in Class III whitewater and it
kept me afloat until I could get to shore. Bought a new one a couple of
years ago, a high-flotation model from Extrasport--full skirt, flotation
material over the shoulders, 24 lb 1 oz rating. You may not want to go as
far as I did, but I'm frequently out in different kinds of water year-round;
if you're not breaking ice on the beaver pond, you can get by with the
minimum. But figure on paying $60+ for a good one. And buying one of those
water skier's vests is not doing yourself a favor; they're designed for
people who will be picked up in a motorboat after about 30 seconds in the
water. But that's just my opinion.
