Thanks for posting this follow-up. The web page that you pointed out
agrees pretty much with my experiences, except that I usually fly
Northwest and have had no problem with checking in luggage that
included a stove. I have had the stove examined, but had always
thoroughly drained and aired out the stove.
It may have helped that I use a stove with an separate fuel tank, not
one of the integrated varieties. This lets me air out the components
more completely and also is easier for the airline people to inspect.
There is probably variation within an airline, from location to location
and between different individuals.
I suspect also that some people bring on their own problems. I have seen
people checking in camping gear and trying to hide that they had a stove
or starting out with a belligerent attitude, and then reaping the fruits
of their own behavior. My personal experience is that being cheerful and
honest is the best approach. The scout law does pay off.
