Text from a recent post to another newsgroup...

This might be a good time to introduce some of the new American Red Cross
programs that are now available...

The new program that replaces "Standard First Aid" is now called "Workplace
Training: Standard First Aid r.99". While the name is similar, the class
content and objectives are very different. The basic core First Aid module
is a shortened first aid class with several optional modules that can be
added to fit the needs of the participants. Presently, the optional modules
include AED skills, Back Injury Prevention, Ergonomics, Workplace Violence
and Slips, Trips and Falls. The new class is 5-1/2 hours long, not including
the modules, and includes Adult CPR Skills. This new meets present OSHA
regulations for workplace training.

Currently authorized CPR/FA instructors may continue to teach the "old"
class until December 31, 2000. The instructor update for the new class is
comprehensive but fun. The new video and instructor materials are very good.
We will continue to offer "Community First Aid and Safety" as well as "First
Aid Basics" as well as all of the CPR modules with no change in course
content that I am aware of.

"Sport Safety Training" has been available for a while but is new to many
chapters. This program was developed by the ARC and the US Olympic Committee
to train coaches. The course content and skills are similar to "Community
First Aid and Safety" with emphasis on sports injury prevention. The new
videos show youth athletes in "real life" scenarios. This is a great program
for youth groups. The new "Small Craft Safety" class is fun to take and
teach!

"When Help is Delayed" is designed to provide citizen responders with
additional planning skills to handle situations when professional help is
more than 30 minutes away. This is a "short" module that can be added on to
"Community First Aid and Safety" or taught as a stand alone class. This
program can easily be tailored to the needs and interests of the
participants. The class is great for Scouts and other "outdoor" youth
groups.

Prospective instructors will soon have the opportunity to take the "new"
Instructor Candidate Training class. This new program is shorter and
contains new videos... It will be called "Fundamentals of Instructor
Training"...

We will have changes to the ARC Lifeguard program. This should be announced
soon. I know of no planned changes for CPR/FPR.

The ARC "Emergency Response" class is now approved in Texas for "up 52 hours
of Continuing Education Units" I know of no changes to this program either.

Remember, the "new" information suggesting leaving out the breathing in CPR
is intended "only" for those who are not trained and are receiving
instruction from a professional dispatcher that is not on the scene... My
solution?... Lets train everyone in basic CPR and First Aid skills.... The
problem will then go away! (Or just tell them to take two aspirin and cough)
:)
