<<News: Baloo's Training

MANDATORY SIX HOUR TRAINING TO TAKE WEBELOS AND SCOUTS CAMPING

This was announced by Chip at the Cub scout weeks. There will be a ninety
day grace period if you have had OWL or SMF.

Scout Executives will be given the announcement on August 1, 2000. >>

There was a session on this called "Pack Camping" at Akela Calls last month
too, with an executive from National teaching it. I ended up in the class
because I'm interested in camping with my kids and the pack doesn't do a lot
of it at the moment. The class was really intended more for district
training team folks, but I learned a lot. The Baloo (Basic Adult Leader
Outdoor Orientation) training is supposedly not for committee chairs or
cubmasters, its for a committee member who will be in charge of Pack
camping, Supposed to be offered twice a year, in October and April. Packs
are supposed to do a campout in the fall and spring. Idea being that each
boy will have a positive outdoor experience within 60 days of joining a
pack. Its a one day training focusing on how to plan and put on a camp out
and very basic camp skills, not a heavy skills program.

My understanding is that someone in the pack has to have the Baloo training
and be the designated Pack Camping person - but not all leaders need to do
it. Hopefully I got that right. I figure since I sat in on this session,
I'm going to be that person for our pack :)
