Well we have them, and some of use them. Instead of the BSA staffs, we use
6' sections of closet rod from one of the home warehouses. A copper pipe
end and union (also from the warehouse) goes on either end, both have to be
inlet with a scout knife. The union gets covered up with a rubber crutch
or chair leg tip. Some are sanded and waxed, some stained and varnished,
some are just stained (or is that dirt??). Got to have medallions, at
least some meaningful ones: BSA, OA, WB critter, JLTC, AT or Florida Trail.

Mine has a "T-nut" in one end, I can thread in a sharpened bolt and use it
to pick up litter on clean-up days. Twenty or thirty feet of paracord does
make a good handle, and I take it off and use it all of the time. In camp
we make up tripods for dribble jugs, but I can also hang my water bladder
from one. Two or three lashed together make a campsite flag pole (always
carry a Harken mini-block and small U.S. Flag in my backpack); my SA makes
a patrol table out of six staves and some small pieces of 1/4 plywood that
each patrol member carries in their backpack. Our weather rock was an
attraction at summer camp last year. In addition to a tripod and flag
pole, mines been used to bust open a pinata at a Court of Honor, part of
water balloon ballista, leg for a presentation easel, and did I mention I
also hike with it?

Down here, they work real good clearing the spider webs from across the
trail (most of the scouts are too short to do a good job for the ones at my
height), moving or blocking palmetto fronds or branches from hitting me in
the face, and they can't be beat for convincing a snake or other nasty to
move on off the trail. Crossing creeks (mostly dry now) does seem easier
with a balance bar or third leg. Other than the para cord, fishing line
and duct tape, most of the other stuff mentioned goes in pockets or ditch
bag, don't want to make it too heavy to carry. Just my .02.
