Don't get me wrong, some lawyers are nice people and would help anybody they could. I just haven't met many. <
Well, Petey Parish of Tampa,
Let me introduce you to one. My boss, Clayton M. Anderson, Esq.
I work in the IT Department in his law firm and he PAYS ME to monitor Scouts-L and bring any interesting scouting issues to his attention, particularly those relating to the use of electronic/digital media to facilitate the communication and efficiency within and between the various Boy Scout organizations. He has a dream of creating a "Digital District" so less time is spent on administration and more time with the boys.
In addition, he has a secretary who spends a good 50+% of her time on "scouting" business for him. His "donation-in-kind" of her salary plus stationary, postage, etc for many different scout functions is amazing! She and I have spent hours of company time building a fund-raising database, doing invitations (in full-color I might add), tracking donations and doing thank-yous to support his efforts in an annual FOS Community Breakfast that he single-handedly envisioned and brought to fruition for the Heartland District for which he serves as District Chairman.
In addition, he was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award in 1999. After receiving the award, he decided to do something really special to honor past and future recipients and put together a wonderful program and dinner (for 500 at a cost of only $15.00 a head) just this spring. The dream was his, but much of the organization, invitations, etc. was done by his secretary on his dime (although the Council did provide some assistance).
He has attended National and World Jamborees and works tirelessly to promote scouting in our community and around the world. He's an ASM for two different troops with his sons, manages a week-long summer camp, and volunteers at the District and Council level, often donating his offices for meetings and personally paying for the donuts and coffee or lunch for all participants!
Just this week he has offered to pay the $50 sponsor fee for ANY employee of the firm who would like to attend the Annual Council Eagle Recognition Dinner. He feels so strongly that each Eagle have a sponsor to sit with that he's willing to pay the fee and organize car pools that will leave the office an hour before quitting time (he'll pay the hour of salary!) for as many employees as want to go!
But he wouldn't tell you any of this himself or ever boast about his personal accomplishments or incredible financial contribution to Scouting. He's too busy raising funds, getting scouting business done, and going on outings with the boys.
He probably wouldn't like me to be bragging on his behalf, but I just had to respond. And one last thing. If he thought it would promote Scouting (or raise some funds), he'd probably even kiss your foot!!!
I'm proud to work for this Scouter-par-excellence who also happens to be a lawyer (and a good one at that!).
