Greetings Scouters:

In response to an earlier posting favoring a
Sewing MB, I am in favor a badge to emphasize
home survival skills. I was involved for a short
time with a group called Royal Rangers. They have
an award called the Bachelor Badge (or something
similar). I thought that the BSA could use a
Merit Badge like that.

Proposed: Bachelor Life Merit Badge (Alt. Eagle
req. badge)

Requirements:

1. Properly run a vacuum sweeper. Properly empty
or change the bag. Properly clean and store the
vacuum sweeper. Sweep your entire home using a
vacuum sweeper. Do this once a week for one
month.
2. Wash all the windows in your home, inside and
outside (if it is safe to do so).
3. Properly wash the sink, bathtub or shower,
toilet and floor of the bathroom you use in your
home.
4. Properly wash and dry, then sort, fold, and
store your own clothes for one month. Include
your sheets, towels, and other cloth items you
use. Describe the dangers of washing colors with
non-colors. Describe the methods to replace socks
lost in the dryer.
5. Iron your uniform. It must look presentable
(to your counselor’s satisfaction).
6. Sew the following to the satisfaction of your
counselor (you may use a machine):
 Patch onto your uniform. The patch must
be properly positioned, and sewn so that it
doesn’t fall off.
 Button onto a shirt or pair of
pants/shorts.
 Hem a pair of pants.
 Mend a rip or hole in a shirt or pair of
pants/shorts. The mend must look better than the
original damage.
7. Demonstrate first aid for puncture wounds.
This must be completed without the use of
swearing.
8. Using the food pyramid as your guide, plan
your meals for one week. The meals must be
nutritionally sound.
9. Prepare a shopping list based on your meal
plan. Obtain the items on your shopping list from
a grocery store or market, spending 1/6 of your
weekly income (you may use coupons). Items
substituted for your shopping list must have the
same nutritional value as the original item.
Ramen soup or mac-n-cheeze can only be used for a
maximum of seven meals; no three meals can be the
same. You may only purchase one meal at a
restaurant or delivery, and the funds must come
from your food budget.
10. Using your meal plan in req. 8, prepare your
meals for one week. This must be done in 21
consecutive meals, over 7 contiguous days. This
requirement can be completed inside or outside.
You must eat your own cooking.
11. Properly Wash, dry, and store all of the
cooking, serving, and eating utensils for the
week you prepare your own meals.
12. Properly dispose of the household trash for
one month. This includes all of the trashcans in
the home. Properly sort the recyclable, organic,
and non-organic trash in accordance with your
local laws.

If anyone else has some suggestions, please add
them, and we’ll send this to national for
recommendation.

YIS,

Ora Sheffler
