This isn't an entirely hypothetical question.
Some years ago I was working as an ASM with a troop that my son was in. The
scoutmaster was excellent in most ways. I noticed one evening that he was
wearing the oval cloth Eagle badge on his shirt instead of the authorized
adult square knot. A few nights later we were at a district round-table and
his shirt had a square knot sans oval.
I asked him on the way home what the game was. His answer made very good
sense. He said that he wore the square knot on one shirt to wear away from
the unit and at courts of honor with the medal so as to not attract the
super scout patch police. In the unit environment his other shirt had the
oval on it so that scouts would know that Eagle Scouts actually existed and
that once they were an Eagle Scout they wpuld always be Eagle Scouts. he
said that most scouts hadn't a clue what the square knots were. At one time
he had worn only the square knot and had the devil of a time getting any of
the scouts up to Eagle. Then one day he had run across his old uniform and
managed to get into the shirt (quite a trick for many of us) and wore it to
the troop meeting that evening. The scouts were amazed at the eagle patch.
He then got a patch and put it on a spare shirt that had evolved over time
into his troop meeting and field uniform. He had been doing that for several
years. The troop was putting out about 20% of its overall members as Eagles.
Not entirely a result of the patch of course but...
What is your reaction to the unofficial wearing of the Eagle patch?
YiS,
Phil abbey
