Rich replies:
Hello Tarleton,
Thanks for asking about our site.
I am the only one maintaining the site at
http://www.bsa.net/in/northstar
It was a logical offshoot from the Troop 586 site
which I maintain.
The site works well for four main reasons:
First, I put together some ideas I saw from other troops/districts/councils,
just as you are researching now.
I decided that the main functions were
1) Calendaring: announce district events, especially roundtable, camporees,
and training,
2) List Resources: accumulate info on units, campsites, how tos, and who can
help, and
3) Communications: allow all district members to ask and share.
Second, I created a free district egroup:
http://www.egroups.com/north-star
allowing all district members to join, share emails, share files, and use the
district calendar. I have little to maintain for contact information.
Third, I made a prototype of the site, and presented it to the district
roundtable for their buy-in. May have done well to take it to the district
committee first. But the District members feel it is their site.
Fourth, I assured district members that we would not let those without
computer access fall through the cracks. We distribute hardcopies of the
calendar at roundtable, reducing the need for 'announcements' there, holding
the meeting to under the allotted hour.
What is your site location?
I'd love to see what you are doing.
Also, how did you learn about our site?

May the North Star be your guide.
