The name of the list and the scope of the list are two separate items.

Doug "Lefty" Coleman, the first listowner of Scouts-L settled on Scouts-L
because "Youth-L" was already taken and was being used. Today, "Youth-L" is
not a high-volume mailing list and Scouts-L is one of the nation's most
respected and well-known youth programs mailing discussion list.

The charter for our list, Scouts-L, is to talk about, inform and share youth
program issues, questions and concerns with each other as a way to better
produce better programs and activities for youth.

So, as Jon Eidson took over the reins of listownership from "Lefty" later,
this list continued to reflect the scope of youth programs, youth issues and
youth concerns.
Those concerns can be national or regional in scope, or they can be
localized, to include our own families.

The key is that within our small online community, we have individuals, with
families, with programs they are a part of and are either trudging along, or
are in a position to provide some assistance to others on this list.
Sometimes, all a poster needs is a set of shoulders to lean against, someone
to share a cup of warm beverages with, or someone to hear their screams or
laughter; to "see" their tears or the lines on their faces. We cannot be
there physically for each and every member on this international
forum....those whom post know this as well as every member knows this. But
we can support each other electronically, and this list has been able to do
with a great deal of precision, candor and concern. That's in a greater
part why people come back here to read the daily discussions over years; and
why they are ready to recommend this list to others, whether or not they are
volunteer Boy or Girl Scouting leaders.

(and why with time, we have received not just toleration but respect from
the nation's leading youth organizations...and why several of their leaders
do make an effort from time to time to actually read and understand the
emotions we have on this list...)

So before you ask the question "What does this have to do with Scouts-L" the
next time you read a posting, think about the charter of this mailing list.
This is NOT a forum just to discuss "Scouting", even though the name of the
list is Scouts-L. We could have been called "Youth-L", or "Programs-L" or
even "Lefty-L".
