I think there is a misunderstanding about my original post. When our
Troop formed four years ago we did not own any equipment. With the
exception of a few hundred dollars of cooking/kitchen gear we still do
not own any equipment. The tents, sleeping bags, chairs, cots, etc. all
belong to each Scout individually. I do not see that changing anytime in
the near future either - the Committee nor I have an interest in
becoming a supply house. The funds we raise (primarily through popcorn)
are plowed into covering normal operating expenses, replacing assorted
cooking/kitchen gear, and occasionally sponsoring a "special" campout
(at a place we would have to pay; i.e. other than one of the numerous
BSA reservations we can stay at for free). The Patrols cover their own
food expenses - we have no need for a common food storage area. So, in
out case, the CO could only lay claim to our meager bank account and
some cooking/kitchen gear. May seem like an odd arrangement - but it
works for us. I wonder how "off the wall" our set up really is?
