In our Troop, every parent is hit up to help in some way. They are
given a list of options, long-term and short-term, and strongly encouraged
to become part of the Troop Committee if nothing else. Our Troop Committee
Chairman is insistent that he will not go camping. But he was very willing
(and quite able!) to become the Chairman, and is doing a bang-up job. This
takes the load off of someone who can and will go camping. We have Mom's
who do not feel comfortable going camping (especially embarrassing for a
12-year-old boy to have Mommy along for the ride), but they do quite well
helping to organize the different fundraisers, etc. Some who do not feel
comfortable with even that can at least drive the boys to a campout. (The
Troop Committee Chair will even help with that, if there's a motel close
enough! =:^}> )
Perhaps we are too vague when we ask someone to help with Scouting. A
list of jobs that need to be done, and then asking "which of these jobs can
you help with?" may just work a little better. We have reached the blessed
point where parents currently active on the Committee are the ones talking
to the new parents when they visit. The SM gets to go play with the boys,
without having to worry about it. He's happier (except now he's got more
boys than he's every had in more than 15 years with the Troop, and that's a
new challenge!), the Troop runs smoothly (well, not 100% but we're getting
there) and the boys are having a great time.
