While I've heard that excuse more times than I can remember, my favorite
parental comment is "I don't understand how you can stand being around these
boys!"

Frankly, my answer to that is pretty simple. If I don't, who will? Parents
have a pretty good imagination when it comes to who influences their
children. If I'm not there, who will be? In the case of Troop 381, the
answer is pretty scary (long story).

While we're on the subject of stupid parental comments, here's a few more:

"My son can't be a Scout anymore, he's going to play football and football
does a better job of developing character." (From a mother who always had
the smell of burning leaves around her)

"Hey man, got any weed?" (From a father, to me, while I was talking to his
son)

"Why is that lady on the troop committee? She doesn't have a son in the
troop!" (From a mother who ISN'T on the committee and can't be bothered to
be)

"My son can't be in your Scout group anymore because you're too active."

To be fair, parents aren't the only one's who make stupid comments:

This one came from my IR a couple summers ago when he learned that one of
our Scouts couldn't go to summer camp becuase he'd promised his minister he
would help the church with their youth camp the same week. "Church camp! His
parents should have MADE him go to summer camp. It's more important!"
