Agreed, Adults and Boy Scouts have other fish to fry and should not
compete with Cub Scouts...those older folks have more delicate egos and
when bested by energetic little guys who don't waste time being "cool"
the damage can be savage. 'round the campfire down this way talk is that
Webelos Scouts aren't allowed to compete at camp-o-rees anymore 'cause
of the
embarrassment caused by dens consistently putting a large whuppin' on
patrols in all the basic Scouting skills. But then, that is just talk.
Somebody better get word to Lost Pines Reservation. Last summer camp
they held a wildly successful Pinewood Derby (optional) and there was
not a Cub Scout in sight. Boy Scouts got their kits, made their cars and
raced them, with the top three finalists recognized at the campfire
just before the OA tapout. While the roster of participants leaned more
toward Tenderfoot than Life, they had fun. It may be that they had a
better time because there were not many adults to get in their way of
building their cars.
True, there should not be any breaking of regs. just so Dad can get
one more design "built" by sonny boy. Boy Scouts and adults should not
be in competition with Cub Scouts, but there are ways to include
everybody in the fun.
In our Pack, the boys race against Ms. Dori (DL) and some of the
other Boy Scouts and leaders (me too!) after their races are run and the
awards handed out. These races are just for fun and help wind things
down after the main event. The boys in the Troop wish that they could
participate...I think I'll invite them this year. Hmmmm.
