Boy, do I ever agree with Blaine. I've been watching this debate over
which artificial device is best for starting a fire.....seems to me that
the points that we're trying to teach when we instruct in firebuilding are
being totally overlooked here! Now I'm not suggesting that we make scouts
build fires by rubbing two sticks together, nor am I saying that in a
freezing rain you don't need to teach scouts how to get warm fast.....but
the lessons of being PATIENT and starting with very small, CAREFULLY
selected tinder, and GRADUALLY add larger kindling and fuel to a
WELL-CONSTRUCTED fire lay are kinda lost when the issue becomes about which
petroleum-laced product you can stuff under a heap of burnable material.
Building a fire that lights from a single match without help of chemicals
will teach a bunch.
