A professional forwarded me the following information; thanks, Gene!
>Mike: you asked about a urban Scouting award other than the W.A. Young
>Service Award. In Detroit and several other urban Councils, the BSA does
>award something called the Spirit of Scouting Award. It is like the the Good
>Scout Award, and is mostly used in connection with Friends of Scouting
>kickoff and recognition dinners in those Councils. The only "requirement" is
>that a person must provide support or service to urban youth through the
>programs of the BSA Council. It does not carry anything but the award, which
>the local Council determines the manner and actual award. No square knot or
>uniform item is associated with the award. Thanks for your assistance
with the
>online Scouters...there's a lot of us that truly appreciate your leadership!
Thanks to you, Gene, and those other professionals out there whom are
willing to help us all out by providing us either through me or other
volunteers, information in which we can share and grow not just Boy Scouting
in America, but all youth programs through awareness!
I later went to the BSA's website and found the following snippet from this
month's _Scouting_Magazine online, in "Scouting Around":
"77-years of active service to Scouting chalked up by Edward Whitehead, who was
awarded the BSA Spririt of Scouting Award for service to urban youth by the
Detroit Area Council."
Finally, I called the Detroit Area Council and asked them about the award.
The award was presented as part of the Council's Friends of Scouting
campaign. It is an example of a national program emphasis which the BSA
provides to local Councils to use in this case in connection with local
Council fund-raising efforts.
Hope this all helps and thanks again, Gene, for the information!
Settummanque!
