An alternate to using a duffle bag to carry the backpack is a new 'locking
system' for packs I've seen stuff about in the last couple of years. Its a
sort of wire mesh that surrounds the pack and secures it with a lock. Many
people use it to secure their bags, not just for traveling (it meets airline
rules), but for the travel to keep the 2-legged animals out of their packs.
Its light enough that they can pack it with them. Sorry, don't know the name
of the product. Have seen articles/ads for it in Backpacker and Outside.
Am sure some of the larger outfitters (REI, Campor, etc) carry it.
