Don't feel guilty about not taking your troop to Philmont. Do a quality
local trip instead. Why do I say this. Because one of our local troops
went last year, then gave a slide show at Roundtable. Mostly the slides
showed scouts hiking in scenery that is less impressive than our local
scenery, lounging around the campsite a lot, not partaking of any learning
activities at the various trail camps (I thought this was meant to be part
of the "deal"), not cooking hot breakfasts (too lazy), and not even taking
desert fixings. The scout present at the presentation did not state one
good reason why this trip was better than a local hike, with the exception
of their being other scouts around on the first and last day, and the trip
into town for pizza on the last day). For this kind of a trip, I would not
bother going to Philmont.
Needless to say, this troop's trip puzzled me, it seemed the opposite of
what I had expected.
If y'all can quote some "good trip" examples, in the same number of words
or less, I'd be interested (I expect to be buried in replies.). In the
interest of fairness, have other troops had disappointing Philmont
experiences? (not counting the long wait to get an opening). You can reply
off-line to hitchings@worldnet.att.net
