Dave,

I can attest to your experience. We have a local brand whose primary
ingredient is grease, salt being second ,and potato by-products well down
on the list. One time my son was at a friends house with a group of
non-scout buddies who could not get the fireplace started. They turned to
Andy and said 'well, since you are a scout, you start the fire'. Well,
Andy asked if they had brand 'x' chips, they did, and he shoveled a couple
of handfuls under the logs. A few minutes later they had a warm roaring
fire in the fireplace. Two outcomes were that first, the other kids no
longer ate brand 'x' chips and the dad made the comment, 'Boy Scouts has
certainly changed'.

Another use we found is for ceremonial campfires. If you need a fire that
starts fast and roars up fast, make your base a couple of bags of brand 'x'
chips. Better than kerosene and safer than white gas!
