I don't know about being sealed up carefully in baggies, but unsealed birch
bark loses its "magic" over a period of years -- I guess the natural oils /
esters / turpentines / whatevers evaporate eventually. E.g., after 10
years or so it still burns pretty well, but not so well that I would risk
having to be able to start a fire in the rain with the stuff.
Of course, here in the north-east, there is usually fresh birch bark within
walking distance of any campground...
(Like Auntie Beans, I also carry a supply of the stuff -- however, I try to
turn my inventory over on a regular basis.)
