The magic in the Eagle is when the boy earns it largely on his own
initiative, but with the help and encouragement of lots of people. An
Eagle gained in response to a "bribe" is tainted, detracts from other
Eagles, and diminishes the satisfaction the boy gains from knowing that he
wanted something enough to do the work necessary to get it.
