The reason is ignorant compassion. It's the same compassion that make some
parents cringe at competition in a pinewood derby or the fear of their son won't
get Eagle. They don't want to see their kids hurt. It's a normal parental
reaction for folks who are not educated in the rewords of struggle to build
individual character. They just haven't been taught to understand how the Aims
and Methods really work to build men from boys. They see struggle as pain to be
avoided instead motivation for learning. But we humans define ourselves through
struggle. It aspires us to be better than we presently are, and motivates us to
seek the better or easier way. What's great about the BSA program is that it's
designed for boys to have FUN while they struggle to learn. It's a program of
building men from boys by getting them to look deeply in themselves to solves
life's little problems. I can think of no program that does it better. The BSA
has to get better at teaching it's leaders of how the program works.
