Last time I posted to this list things seemed to be going so well with my den, but now I'm getting very discouraged. I took over my son's fifth-grade Webelos den at the beginning of November when the previous leader moved. The den was always one where we only got about 50% turnout at any event. I am fully trained (overtrained) and was a Wolf and Bear den leader, Tiger Assistant Leader, Tiger Coach, and Webelos Assistant Leader. My goal was for all the boys to have fun, practice some leadership skills, and all cross over to Boy Scouts at the end of February. But since December we have been lucky to have 3 or 4 boys present at anything we do. Sometimes it's just my son and his best friend, whose father is also a registered leader. I call the parents and they tell me they are busy or the kids have been sick, then after they don't show up for a couple of meetings I hear that they want to drop out. We MAY have 4 still participating at crossover--at this point, my son is the !
only one I'm sure of! (His best friend does not like to camp.) With only one month left there is not much I can do, but I would like to draw upon the wisdom of the list. I have asked the boys for ideas on what they want to do, but they aren't interested in much except Nintendo. We have visited several Boy Scout troops and events. These boys have a lot of opportunities available to them and Scouting just doesn't seem to interest them anymore. What can I do?
