In our troop, our practice is to strictly adhere to 2 deep. This means
- if you are the only adult in the room of boys, you do wait outside. A
little cold air is better that a life-shattering accusation;
- if a boy has parents arrive late, two adults wait. Granted, we are not
happy adults, but we wait.
- as much as is possible we make sure when traveling alone in vehicles that
we have our own boy with us. We are also aware of where other vehicles in
the troop are when we are on the road.
I work for a criminal defense attorney. We have had to deal with some pretty
heartbreaking situations where someone was falsely accused of molestation.
Having seen this happen and seen the miserable consequences, I make it my
life's work to let other Scouters -- and any other adult who comes in contact
with kids on a regular basis -- know to be extremely circumspect. Standing
in the cold for a few minutes is a small price to pay in comparison to having
your life and reputation destroyed.
