I'm reminded of a request from a parent this fall to reduce the
number of troop meeting to every other week because so many of
the Scouts were missing meetings due to sports. With fewer, but
longer meetings, they could attend the second half after practice
was over. The CC originally rejected having an outing in December
because the holidays are so hectic that it might be hard to squeeze
in an outing before school's out and everyone leaves town.
My response to both was let's not reduce our program just because
some boys choose not to attend all of the events - even if that 'some'
is a majority (which it isn't). Not every Scout is in sports or is leaving
town at Christmas. So let's not penalize them by taking away some
of the opportunities. I will volunteer my precious time to take the
troop on an outing no matter how few want to go.
On the other hand, our troop has switched meeting nights a couple
of times in its history. I'm told that it was switched in the '60's because
they couldn't compete with the T.V. show Batman. Four years ago
we switched to accommodate those Scouts who wanted to attend
Bible study on Monday evenings. Both of those situations are
different from reducing the number of meetings.
