I'm from Iowa & this problem is widespread here.
The drug that is being manufactured is called methamphetimine, or "meth".
Some of the products used to "cook up" a batch of the drug are ether (from
auto starting fluid), anhydrous amonia (agri fertilizer), and other toxic
chemicals. The by-products are nasty.
We have a lot of "education" being offered by local news channels alerting us
to the fact that if we come accoss anything with a strong (ether or ammonia)
odor, you should back off immediately & call law enforcement. Special
hazardous material cleanup teams are dispatched to clean up the "dump site".
In our area, most of the dumpsites are being found in very rural areas,
but.....have been found in City Parks too. You just never know where it's
going to pop up.
People picking up litter along roadways should be cautious of anything with a
strong odor. Hope this is helpful.
