>There is very little motivation in the PLC to plan or run meetings or events.
This happens every once in while in our Troop as well, and usually it's because
we focused more on program, less on goals and training. Sometimes the
Scoutmasters get to focused and should step back to look at the big picture
again. I have to remind myself to ask other adults what they see also.
-Make sure the Scouts set clear goals so they know when they reached them. Be
their biggest cheer leader as they achieve those goals
-Their activities have to be fun. Make sure they design fun into the activity
their way and not so much the adults way. Adults can throw in ideas but I
usually only do this when they need a little prodding.
-Make sure they know how to get there. Train them to succeed and stand back to
allow them to learn from their performance. Once at JLT the older scouts acted
out "the ideal Patrol Corners". In the middle of it, one Scout said, "Oh, so
that's what we are suppose to do!".
-Go through the SPL, he has to learn it is his responsibility to get on track.
That's why he paid the big bucks.
>On the otherhand there should be rewards for good work. When I led a troup at
Summer camp, the PLC >meetings were held off camp grounds at the local ice cream
parlor -- if the troop was passing >commissioner inspection. My did we have a
clean camp
We also learn to treat the PLC when things are going right. There is always
treats for them a PLC meetings on campouts and we try to have a PLC party at end
of their term. Every six months or so, we give gifts to the top performing
Scouts and the SPL. Just inviting the SPL to eat with the adults can be seen as
reward for a good day done.
Leadership is hard work, but boys join Scouts for the fun. So make the work fun.
I once heard a SM tell his Troop to behave through the boring program so they
can have their fun at the game. I hound our guys to plan every minute of the
meeting to be fun. From the opening to great Scoutmaster Minutes, everything in
the meeting should be fun. It's another goal.
You came to the right place for great ideas, ask in your District as well. I am
always reading Scouts_L to get new ideas for motivation. Once you figure it out,
your going to love the results, but it won't happen instantly, it takes time.
It's a good thing your starting on this now. Can't wait to hear how you do it.
