Once when I was SM, in a period when things were humming along just about
right, we were at summer camp & one of the older boys noticed me regularly
answering questions from younger ones with "What does your PL say?" - and
everything getting resolved that way - and asked "Mr. Gerlach, just what is
your job as Scoutmaster?" I told him "To stand here with my hat and walking
stick looking like a Norman Rockwell painting". For the rest of the week,
every time he saw me in my smokie he laughed. He gave me a nice bas relief
plaque of Rockwell's "The Scoutmaster" at his Eagle CoH. And yes, I did
later explain to him that I also trained the SPL to train & lead the PLs, so
I was free fulfill that other vital function.)
