We were packing away the Christmas decorations this weekend which led into a
thorough cleaning of the guest room closet (sound familiar to any of you)?
And it's still not all put away.
My wife is a real packrat and we came across 1965-66 Cub Scout Program
Quarterly. On the inside cover is a page on uniforms with a header in large
type "That Smart Look Is Yours In Cub Leaders Uniform... It's smart looking
and so versatile"! It has some nifty B&W photos of models in uniforms (the
woman must have a 15 inch waste)! I noticed that the Den Mother's blouse
came in Maize or Navy and she had a choice of fabrics and a skirt or
culottes, hmmm.. no pants... also a nifty tie and front to back hat. She
looks more like a flight attendant from that period the a scouter. The man in
the Cubmasters uniform is posed with his finger pointing, as if he's giving
directions or making a point (probably to the den mothers). The Den Mother's
uniform is priced by the individual pieces of clothing as it's so versatile
their are so many combinations. The CM's is given as 4 options, including
fabrics in serge, broadcloth and dacron wool, none of which is more than
$19.95 and include trousers, field cap and shirt (guess you had to spring for
the dacron tie socks and belt)
In small print at the bottom is the following:
"IMPORTANT! To promote good uniforming, the Boy Scouts of America makes these
leader's outfits at less than the cost to manufacture them. Get the complete
uniform at one time and you'll make a substantial cash savings." Yea,
right...
By the way the Cub Scout themes for the year starting in September were "Barn
Raising, Magic Words, Achievement Parade, Happy Game, Transportation, Strong
for America, Knights of the Roundtable, Mother Nature's Backyard, Jungle
Tales, Sports Carnival, Summertime Adventure and Family Fun.
Well I guess I better finish putting all this stuff back in the closet.
