To My friends at Scouts-L
My husband (bless him) is willing to be trained in climbing/rappelling
(it is a hobby he has enjoyed for 25 years) and he is a firefighter so he has
to do some rescue rappelling in his work.
We spoke with the DE who told us about the National Camp School (cost
about $300 and a one week commitment) and then he said that if my husband
became trained the Council might be willing to pick up part of the fee so he
could train others.
In looking again at the paragraph in GSS it appears that there may be 2
levels of climbing/rappelling training. The highest level is the "qualified
BSA climbing/rappelling instructor" (one week course) the next level is a
"qualified rock climbing/rappelling instructor" who must supervise the
activity and this is a 10 hour course. Our confusion comes in part because
the names of both are so similar.
To make it just a tiny bit more confusing the 10 hours of training could
be from "a nationally or regionally recognized organization, a climbing
school, a college level rappelling course" if I am reading page 29, GSS
correctly.
In addition to Fire Dept. formal training my husband thinks it's fun to go
out in the middle of no where and carry everything he needs on his back. He
has been to a week long climbing school and a glacier climbing school that
was also a week (just for fun).
So here are my questions.....
1. Am I interpreting the GSS correctly?
2. In order to supervise the activity at the troop
level what class
would he NEED to take?
3. Do any of the Circle Ten Council members know if
that
Council offers the 10 hour Class? We live about
a 1 1/2
hour drive from there.
Sorry to be so long, but my Scouts WANT to go rappelling and as you know
nothing stands in the way of a determined MOM.
