Re: Advancement dilly

In our troop it is the responsibility of the boy to present his book to the
advancement chairman after the board of review so she can record it, give him
his patch, and arrange to present the card and mother's pin at the next COH.

Most boys are prompt about this. A few are not. We have one boy who has
been in our troop for about a year and has NEVER presented his book to the AC
for his scout and tenderfoot ranks. This, unfortunately, just came to our
attention.

We feel really badly that he has been overlooked, but we announce the need to
see the AC after BOR during our closing circle announcements on a very
regular basis. AND his mom is usually present at that time.

Basically, we are all volunteers doing our best. No matter how hard we try
we can't take the place of parental guidance and interest. Additionally, the
goal of our program is to teach boys self-reliance. If advancement is not
important to the boy or of any interest to his parents, there is only so much
we can do. Will we make sure to get him his advancements at this point? You
bet we will. So fast his head will spin. Will we beat ourselves up for the
oversight? Nope.

Just MHO. Katherine Coates
