The recent expose on the aberrant behavior of a former Scouter as
reported by 20/20 shows how very little true information we are being
provided by ALL of our news outlets. It would be of little interest to
anyone if BaBA WaWA or Dan Blather ran a segment on their respective
Video News Magazine about dedicated adults who constantly dig deeply into
their finances or time banks to support Scouting. It is plain and simple
that Americans are not being provided enough information to make
qualitative decisions in their lives. From the "stars" on the network
news programs to the Ken and Barbies on local stations, we get the same
old pap - if it bleeds, it leads. Every station has a consumer reporter
who spouts factoids about bacteria in dishrags or the latest killer
chicken in the meat case.
You would never know, form the media, that American schools are
exceedingly safe places for kids. There have been 12 mass shootings at
American schools since 1990 resulting in far fewer deaths than motor
vehicles, drownings, pedestrian accidents or parental abuse. Watch the
latest spate of consultants purporting to give predictors for school
violence - a new growth industry. It is the new hot topic for the
political side of education. A girl in Minnesota was suspended from her
high school because she posed on a canon for her high school yearbook.
She was making a statement about her intentions on enlisting in the US
Army following graduation. Talking head on the school board gave the
usual line about guns and school violence. Does make you wonder doesn't
it?
