Band Camp Follow Up

Drew Mrenna (dmrenna@USA.PIPELINE.COM)

Just wanted to pass along a follow up on what I reported about
initiations during Band Camp.

I had to go all the way up to the superintendent of schools. She called
me back to provide an update with her discussions with the Band Director
and Principle.

They disguised it by calling it Rookie day, it was still a form of an
initiation.

Most of the events that were done were to get the new band members to
bond together. They played games similar to ice breakers that we use in
Scouting to learn about different people. Those I did not have a
problem with.

The boys being made to wear dresses will be stopped. Although done in
fun, all sides agreed that this was not necessary and can be considered
hazing.

Walking blind folded in the woods is another item that will be
discontinued. They did not have to walk far, but still it could be
dangerous.

I was assured that the Bull Dog Meat was all edible (for human
consumption) and that they had verified that nobody was allergic to any
of the ingredients. Still not a tasty mixture. I still do not know why
it has to be so disgusting.

I believe that all parties are now better aware of what goes on during
band camp. Changes needed to be made and I was assured that they will.
They will still have a Rookie Day. I still do not agree that it is all
fun, but with the changes, it will not cause harm.

Now the big question, will I let my daughter attend next years camp? If
I had to sign up today, the answer will be no. Maybe by the time August
rolls around I would have changed my mind.

Thanks for listening. Also, thanks for all the support I received.

YIS,

Drew
