As I've always understood it, you could either kill or count coups.

Someone counting coups would be unarmed; it would be bad form to kill
him. That was one of the things that infuriated the AmerInds -- White
Eyes never quite caught on to the rules! (g) (As I recall, it's
mentioned in the Diaries of the man who later became President Washington.)
