Replacing halyard - update

I wanted to again thank everyone for the excellent advice given a few
months ago on replacing halyards. The halyard was replaced without
incident. We used a thin wire to join the two ropes together, wrapped
the joint with electrical tape, then put that shrink wrap type stuff
over it all. The joint passed the roller at the top of the flag pole
without the slightest hitch.
The Scouts were so pleased with the results they've volunteered to do
replace another.
