The phone company came to our school (I was in 4th or 5th grade) and
showed us how to listen for the dial tone before dialing (wish I could
teach my kids that), then how to dial. Then we all got a chance to try it
on their mockup.
I think we had a dial phone in our home within a year after that -- a big
heavy black one, no other color was available. The little "princess"
phone came out a few years later -- in colors!
