"How do you counteract the push by Parents to have their
sons do sports
to the exclusion to all else? We have had the problem with
one or two
boys from time to time but not a major deal. This year I am
finding that
many of my 2nd year Webelos won't be returning because their
Parents
have given them the ultimatum Sports (Football, Basketball
and Baseball)
or Scouts..."and Dad really does LOVES sports". The fairly
small rural
town here in East Texas has always adored their sports
heroes and we are
having a hard time competing even with field trips, camp
outs and hikes.
The kids who are good at sports and make the teams are
treated so much
better than the other students by the school system, the
town and most
people. This is the same for the Girls and Girl Scouts.
Any suggestions to make us appear as wonderful as sports to
sports happy
kids and parents?"
The only suggestion I have is to compare the "Aims, Purposes
and Methods" with the sports program and let the Sports
Parents decide which of the Spiritual Growth, Citizenship,
Sportsmanship, Family Understanding, Getting Along with
Others, Personal Achievement, Helpfulness, Exciting Things
to Do, and Preparing to be Boy Scouts, that they want left
out of their sons' lives in favor of sports glory. And then
show them how the sports activities can augment what their
boys get from Scouting, but can never replace it.
