Re: Tips on speaking to groups

This subject was created by a first year Cubmaster looking for advice. Mr.
Roach gave excellent advice in suggesting that the new CM think like he were
9 years old.
My advice is similar: Don't ever be afraid of looking foolish. This is not
a program designed to entertain adults. Don't ever play to them (they may
get bored, they may complain about your, but who cares- they're not Cub
Scouts). Play to the boys. Make funny faces, do silly things, make them
laugh, make them be attentive (not by forcing them but by what you do), be
serious about the Flag, speak simply, use drama that would appeal to a child,
use magic (learn some), use dry ice (makes a great smoking cauldron), use
symbolism (the yellow of my neckerchief is the sun and a warm summer day-
the blue of neckerchief is the clear sky and the outdoors), have fun. Laugh
with the boys. Share the stage, let others look silly too.
This is not a position for a dignified executive (though he or she may be
that at work or even at committee meetings); this is a job for a man boy who
can wonder about the stars and share that with a 9 year old, who can enjoy
the sound of a crackling fire or the smile on a 7 year old Tiger Cub who sees
his first roast mashmellow.
Being Cubmaster is the most fun I ever had in Scouting, and I've been most of
the other jobs too. I envy you the beginning again.
Yours in Scouting,
G. John Marmet
ex Cubmaster
