Hi Ed,
I am not the best at it, but the best most attention grabbing and holding
Cubmasters I have seen are not because they are good public speakers. They
are the ones who seem to have a screw loose and can remember all the dumb
jokes and skits (I have read them all but can never remember them when
needed) ever written. The boys need a lot of entertainment to keep their
attention. If you are like me and have trouble acting quite as crazy as you
would like in front of others, look for those qualities in Asst. Cubmaster
or other leader. They can interrupt when things get too boring.
When speaking to parents and other adults, the only recommendation I can
make is to know ahead of time what you want to say. I find that if I
research the information enough I get bored with it and so will my audience.
Keep it short and concentrate on the things that are important to you. You
will know the topics better and it will probabally be important to parents
too.
If all else fails, don't forget the old suggestion of trying to imagine the
audience in their underwear. It may not help you to be a better speaker, but
it may give you a good laugh.
