Ned,
I apologize for starting this misunderstanding. The ban on liquid
fuels is a local Council one though it appears to be universal in
Southern California. I think it is related to state or federal
regulations relating to the area forests but I am not sure. The ban
is so widespread in this area that I assumed it was national until
several people pointed out otherwise. One thing to consider though
is that if you follow the BSA Guide to Safe Scouting guidelines they
are pretty effectively a ban unless you go to a camp which is
specifically set up for proper fuel storage and handling.

Can someone tell me when this came about? We use mostly propane on
troop campouts, but there is a group in the BWCAW starting Tuesday

if I read this quite literally, they can't use white gas since

not backpacking.
