Re: 50 MIler restrictions?

In the description of the preparation hikes, there was no specific
mention of a "shakedown weekend". We always went on a
weekend backpacking trip about three weeks before the 50-miler.
We packed in about the average daily distance along a roadside
at our desired daily pace. This ensured that any pack fitting issues
were resolved before the big trip. It also ensured that Scouts would
be able to keep up with the pace. Hiking along the road allowed a
truck to follow behind to deal with issues such as a broken strap
(it happened) and Scouts who just could not keep up with the pace.

The packs were brought up to expected 50-miler weight by adding
additional water bottles. We used all the gear that we would use
on the trip. This turned out to be a very good practice, as we found
we had a brand-new stove with intermittent performance. It has to be
replaced before the trip.

Hope this helps,

Jim Fuller
