50 miler versus monthly camps

Bob and Rusty Taylor (brtaylor@TELEBYTE.NET)
Sun, 15 Aug 1999 08:49:50 -0700

our unit just finished our 50 miler--we went over the Lowe Divide Trail
(Olympic National Park) from south to north, had a great time, learned
bunches, and generally had as good a time as you can on a 50 miler. if you
want all the details e-mail me off-list.

observation; for our unit, getting ready for a 50 miler seems to almost be
a different program from getting ready for our monthly camp outs; menu
development, equipment needed, weight issues (gear, not Scouters!). sure an
overnighter requires a lot less preparation, but I sort of thought that the
monthly program was to lead boys skill wise to the high adventure trips.

if this is indeed the case, then do we need to make an effort to see that
our program treats monthly campouts as a preparation for the 50 miler? your
thoughts would be appreciated.
