Re: What's WRONG with parent camping

Donald R Izard (dizard@ACSU.BUFFALO.EDU)

Without trying to prevent a parent from camping, I would
make sure that a parent understands some important goals
and methods of scouting.

Youth Leadership and the Patroll method

While parents MAY camp with scouts - under the guide to safe
scouting - parents should be "educated" to understand that
they are NOT to interfere with the program.

They are NOT permitted to HELP Jonny with his merit badge work,
and they are NOT permitted to wash his sox, or clean up his
tent OR do his kitchen chores - or KP etc.

IF there are a registered ASM or a Merit Badge councilor,
that CAN teach a group of two or more scouts, a scout skill.
They can also quietly Observe. With comments and suggestions
to be submitted to the SM or Committee chairman - at a later
time. Parents SHOULD not question the camp appointed instructors
unless there is a violation of the Guide to safe scouting.
Each parent should be required to read that document before
be allowed to camp. It can stop a lot of arguments - before
they happen. If the parent need more to keep him busy,
give him a copy of the Scout Master Handbook, then the Field Guide
and then Wood Wisdom. Then sign them up and sent them to SMF!!
