well Jim, there's a phrase in the Bible that goes something like "Ask and
ye shall receive, seek and ye shall find". Your posting kinda had the
answer right in it. Scouting is a wonderful world where all kinds of
individuals get together to enjoy a shared fun. I appears to me that you
have a great program, you mentioned about the boys planning, and you (I
presume with other leaders) make suggestions and offer some expanded ideas
for the youth to consider. Not everything is for everyone. Your group
doesn't like to backpack, and that's OK. Even though Philmont is the
backpacking mecca, Florida Sea base is the ocean mecca and Northern Tier is
the canoeing mecca. Try looking for what your boys enjoy doing and offer a
mecca trip that peaks their interest. It's a big world with lots to do, you
might even find yourself in a new part of the world.
Good luck
James

For two years straight at our annual planning conference the Troop
(boys) has turned down any suggestions or activities relating to hiking
and backpacking. Hoping to guide them in a direction that would
eventually lead to a Philmont type trek has been frustrating.

Hoping for insight,
